What is maltitol?

Our chocolate vendor uses maltitol as the sweetener in the sugar-free chocolate.

Maltitol is a corn-based sweetener which contains many of the same properties as table sugar. While the sweetener itself is lower in caolories, when used in chocolate the final product is higher in calories. Using maltitol in the chocolate means a requirement for more fat. Using more cocoa butter causes problems, so the manufacturer has had to add a higher amount of butter fat. This insures that the final chocolate product is smooth and creamy, but it is not necessarily lower in fat or calories, as a whole.

While this sugar-free chocolate is great for those watching carb counts and sugars, please remember that the final product is higher in fat than our regular chocolate products.
